A 203-unit affordable apartment complex is set to go up near the Capitol Light Rail Station in San Jose, officials announced this week.
The project is planned for a station parking lot at Highway 87 and Narvaez Avenue.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan applauded the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority for agreeing to lease the property. The VTA has six other projects in the pipeline near transit hubs in the region.
“We can accommodate our city’s growth and reduce traffic congestion by building housing in locations with access to many transit options that take residents where they want to go,” Mahan said in a statement.
To meet its state-mandated housing goal, San Jose must plan for how to add 62,200 more homes — over half of them affordable — by 2031.
The apartments at the VTA site will be reserved for individuals and families earning up to 60% of the county’s median income. That’s $76,140 a year for one person and $108,780 a year for a family of four.
MidPen Housing, which builds and manages affordable homes in Santa Clara and 11 other Northern California counties, will develop the project.
It was not immediately clear when the project could break ground or when construction could be completed.
