Heavy weapons are one of Starfield’s most deadly guns. They either fire single, precise, deadly shots or spray a barrage of bullets. However, they tend to weigh more and have drawbacks, like longer reload times or more expensive ammunition.
Building solely around heavy weapons can be harder as they are not always the ideal option. In some cases, they are too slow to take more evasive enemies. In others, they are so powerful as to be overkill and a waste of precious resources. While you can still use heavy weapons as a main firearm, consider taking a reliable pistol or rifle as a secondary gun.
7 Heller’s Cutter
The Cutter is a reliable laser tool that also can act as a weapon. While the weapon has generic versions, the Heller’s Cutter is a little more powerful. It was formally owned by Heller, one of the Argos Extractors. They will wind up abandoning the weapon as part of the story. You can relocate it by returning to Vectera and opening the cutter storage crate from the game’s tutorial.
Heller’s Cutter only deals four damage per hit without modifiers. But it is energy-based, which can be a great advantage over plain physical bullets in Starfield. The cutter also has a Disassembler feature, which will increase its damage against robots. This will make Heller’s Cutter very useful for the first half of the game and possibly even in later encounters that specifically include robot enemies.
6 X-989 Microgun
The X-989 is one of the unique Miniguns available. A basic version of the Microgun is on display at The Well UC Surplus store in New Atlantis. This shop is monitored by watchful staff who won’t sell it. It can be stolen, but you will be branded a criminal for taking it. Instead, join the UC Vanguard faction and complete missions for them. During the penultimate quest of Hostile Intelligence, speak to the UC Agent and ask them for some weapons. This will include the X-989 and some extra ammunition.
The X-989 doesn’t do much damage per hit but instead fires out an extreme barrage of bullets. Once it gets going, the Minigun can easily fire off ten or more rounds each second. Additionally, it deals extra damage to any alien enemies. The weapon also has four mods installed: Laser Sight, Tactical Grip, Tactical Magazine, and Long Barrel. This leaves two slots for further customization at a workbench in Starfield.
5 N67 Smartgun
The N67 is the second unique Minigun option. This can be bought at the UC Distribution shop on New Atlantis. The merchant, Wen Tseng, will sell it for around 32,000 credits. This can be quite an investment, but it is worth it early on. Another nice thing is you can buy the gun without going too far into side quests or other activities.
The N67 has an enemy better perk than the X-989 in Shattering. This ability punctures and ignores enemy armor, making it very versatile. Additionally, it has two weapon mods: Compensator and Armor-piercing Rounds. This leaves even more room to place up to four weapon mods in Starfield to make a fully customized Microgun.
4 Poisonstorm
The Poisonstorm is a unique Magstorm heavy gun. It can be bought from the shop Kore Kinetics on Neon. After taking the elevator down to the bottom level, the store is located near the Trade Tower. The gun costs 40,000 credits, making it very expensive. Plan on grabbing it later on once money is no longer an issue. Or wait for New Game+ in Starfield to collect every gun.
Poisonstorm normally does ten physical damage per hit. However, its perk of Poison will randomly convert this to poison-based damage. More importantly, the gun can also slow down targets. This makes it an excellent means of crowd control instead of just pure damage. Poisonstorm has two mods of High Velocity and Depleted Uranium; it cannot be customized further.
3 Shattered Shock
Shattered Shock is one of the possible Bridger-style grenade launchers in Starfield. Like the X-989, it is found during the UC Vanguard mission Hostile Intelligence. It will be found at Londinion inside a crate on an overhead platform. You will need to use a boost pack to reach it. This area has several enemies, so dispatch them before looking for loot. If you complete the mission, Londinion may be closed off for a time.
The Shattered Shock has the Shattering perk, just like the N67. This means it can fully bypass even the most well-protected foes. It is especially great for completing Hostile Intelligence, as some inhabitants can have high armor defenses. Outside of that, the unique gun has three mods: Long Barrel, Short Scope, and Tactical Stock.
2 Ashta Tamer
The Ashta Tamer is another possible unique Bridger grenade launcher. This can be gained from the main story quest, Empty Nest. This will take you to the planet of Akila City and into a derelict cave. There will be a weapon crate with the gun inside. This makes obtaining the weapon at a lower level and without being side-tracked is easy.
The gun deals 127 physical damage in a decent-sized area blast. It has the Incendiary perk, which can randomly convert damage into fire-based damage. It only has one mod, Tactical Stock. This might seem lousy at first, but it also means five mod slots are left for lots of customization.
1 Reckless Bombardment
The Reckless Bombardment is yet another heavy weapon that can be gained by joining the Uc Vanguard faction in Starfield. This can be bought from the special NPC Lieutenant Azedo at New Haven. He will offer up the gun for 70,000 credits. It is a good idea to buy this now as if Azedo dies later, the gun will become unviable for the remainder of the campaign.
The gun’s main feature is the Crippling perk, which increases damage if the target is hit in the arms or legs. It is also full of mods, including Stabilizing Barrel, Recon Laser Sight, Reflex Sight, Tactical Stock, and Hornet Nest. This doesn’t leave much room for more customization, but is already a powerful starting combination.
