Amber Benson, a writer and cast member of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel Audible drama, gives an update on a potential season 2. Benson was among several cast members who returned for Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, reprising her role as Tara Maclay. The nine-episode series takes place roughly a decade after the events of the Buffy finale, but it largely moves away from the show’s continuity. With the notable exception of Spike (James Marsters), Slayers mostly focuses on characters of an alternate universe where Buffy Summers does not exist.
Speaking with Collider about the possibility of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story season 2, Benson shared that she’s discussed that possibility with the cast. Benson, who wrote the Audible drama with Christopher Golden, and Kc Wayland, says in the quote below: “We are in the process of trying to make that happen. Chris and I just have lots of ideas.” Benson also talks about some of the objectives behind the project:
We are hoping to do a Season 2. We are in the process of trying to make that happen. Chris and I just have lots of ideas. Literally, every actor stopped one of us during our time at New York Comic-Con, going, “Okay, so I have some thoughts about what my character is gonna do in Season 2,” [laughs] which means that everybody is excited and wants to get on board.
That is, for me, the most important part of this, personally, is that Chris and I have created a world that the actors are still safe in and they wanna come and play. I feel very protective of that. Sometimes you can’t make everybody happy all of the time, but we’re trying to be as thoughtful, and compassionate, and empathetic as we can be as people creating this world. We didn’t create the world, we are creating this audio version of a world
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story Sets Itself Apart
In the Audible audio drama, Spike attempts to track down a Watcher for his eager new Slayer protégé. Their paths collide with the veteran Slayer of a parallel reality where Buffy Summers never existed and Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) is the “one-and-only” Slayer who needs Spike’s help to deal with his former flame Drusilla (Juliet Landau). On the surface, this may seem like a general Buffy continuation with one major difference.
Tara is in a relationship with Dru, and the formerly timid witch has a decidedly evil side. Anya (Emma Caulfield) also has magic powers of her own. There are references to the original series and its events, mainly from Spike and new slayer Indira (Laya DeLeon Hayes) but that actually may be where the Audible drama lags. Slayers has some big reveals, but also wants to acknowledge the events of Buffy. However, Slayers is stronger when it stands on its own as an entry in the show’s larger universe.
The goal of the project is to bring some closure for characters like Cordelia, Anya, and Dru.
The cast of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer audio drama has been candid about how the goal of the project is to bring some closure to characters like Cordelia, Anya, and Dru. They each had unceremonious exits that never sat well with viewers, and the audio drama is an effort to tell a different story. As it continues, the Slayers saga could well form its own identity.
