Murphy, 64, has served as Milwaukee’s bench coach since 2015 after starting his MLB coaching career with the San Diego Padres.
The Brewers were in the market for a new manager after Craig Counsell’s contract expired and the longtime skipper left for a record-breaking contract with the Chicago Cubs.
Murphy served as the Padres’ interim manager for 96 games in 2015, guiding San Diego to a 42-54 record.
Before moving to the MLB ranks, Murphy served as the head coach at Notre Dame and Arizona State University, where he posted a record of 947-400-2 over 22 seasons.
Toronto Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly had been connected to the managerial opening in Milwaukee. He had been given more responsibility as the team’s offensive co-ordinator for 2024, but general manager Ross Atkins said the Blue Jays wouldn’t stand in the way if a promotion was offered to Mattingly.
