Sydney Sweeney was bitten by a real spider while filming Anyone but You. From Easy A and Friends with Benefits director Will Gluck, the upcoming romantic comedy stars Sweeney and Glen Powell as two people who pretend to be a couple at a destination wedding in Australia despite despising one another. Other than the Euphoria and Top: Gun Maverick stars, the Anyone but You cast also includes Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths, and Bryan Brown.

Ahead of the Anyone But You release date, Sweeney has been making the rounds sharing a story about her being bit by a spider during filming. On Live with Kelly and Mark, the actress said it was a huntsman spider that bit her which left a “horrible” mark and required her to “take meds“:

That was a real spider. It bit me. It was a huntsman. While we were filming that scene, it bit me. It hurt so bad, I had horrible, horrible marks on my hand. I had to take meds and everything. Because anything can kill you in Australia.

Sweeney also appeared on the Today show alongside Powell, and the two shared more details about the scene:

Sweeney: The spider actually bit me in the middle of the scene, but nobody called cut because they thought I was just making a very dramatic, interesting choice in this scene. Glen was the only one who finally caught on — they thought I was acting but it actually bit me.

Powell: There’s a different tone to her voice when somebody is actually being bit by a spider. We just thought it was really dramatic improv.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sweeney shared the actual footage of her being bit by a spider, starting at the 6:50 minute mark:

Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone But You Spider Bite Foreshadows Her Next Movie

As seen in the Anyone but You trailer, there is a scene in which Bea and Ben get handsy with one another during a group hike in order to make their romantic ruse more convincing. While their fellow hikers barely notice, Bea eventually pulls a large spider out of Ben’s pants and tosses it aside. It was while filming this scene that Sweeney was bitten by the aggressive huntsman spider which, by pure coincidence, actually foreshadows her next movie.

After Anyone but You, Sweeney stars in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe movie, Madame Web, which also stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb. In the Marvel movie, Sweeney plays the role of Julia Carpenter, also known as Spider-Woman. In the comics, the character gets her powers after being accidentally injected with spider venom, unlike Peter Parker who is actually bitten by a spider, but still, Sweeney being bitten by a spider on Anyone but You is an amusing coincidence considering her upcoming role as Spider-Woman.

Anyone but You releases on December 22, while Madame Web releases on February 14, 2024.
