The San Francisco 49ers had a near-perfect roster that came one half away from winning Super Bowl LVIII.
However, the 49ers fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs and now go into the offseason with some decisions to make about their roster.
Some of their key defensive players are due to be free agents, while the offense could lose Brandon Aiyuk who’s heading into his fifth year and is up for an extension.
From a quarterback standpoint, San Francisco appears set with Brock Purdy who’s still under contract for 2024 and 2025.
Purdy was able to lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl and there’s no reason to believe he’ll regress next season.
However, Nick Wright believes that San Francisco would be better off if they had someone like Kirk Cousins under center via First Things First.
“If Kirk Cousins wants to win a Super Bowl. the best fit is the ol’ high school sweetheart — the 49ers. … If they had a difference maker at QB, maybe the Super Bowl goes differently,” Wright said.

Cousins was having a career-year with the Minnesota Vikings before he tore his Achilles, but is still considered the best quarterback in free agency.
When healthy, Cousins has a proven track record of being able to push the ball vertically downfield and that would go a long way in the Bay Area given their explosive offensive players.
There’s no indication that San Francisco is looking to move off of Purdy, but it’s hard not to wonder what the team would look like if they had Cousins manning the controls.
