Harrison Ford Reveals His Thoughts On The Indiana Jones 5 Ending & Where He Leaves His Iconic Character

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.Harrison Ford shares his thoughts on the ending of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. With Dial of Destiny advertised as Indy’s final adventure, and numerous comments from Ford and various executives that this would be the final time he played the iconic character, there was a great deal of speculation about how the film would end. One concern was that it would end with Indy’s death, especially since Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold, who directed Logan. Before Deadpool 3, Logan was Hugh Jackman’s final performance as Wolverine, and ended with the titular character’s death.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ford explains why he didn’t have to be concerned with Indy dying in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He also shares his feelings regarding how the story culminates the journey of the beloved character he has been playing since 1981. Read Ford’s comments below:

“When the script came out, it didn’t have Indiana Jones dying, so we didn’t need to talk about it. During the course of filming, it came up a few times, and James Mangold said he didn’t want to be the one to kill me. I think it’s a good choice to leave him in the condition we see him at the end of the film. Most of his problems have been solved, dealt with. He’s back to the form that we like to see him in, I think. And I think it’s a wonderful last scene… I really like it.”

How Dial Of Destiny Gives Indiana Jones A Satisfying Ending

Indy and Helena in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Indy wanted to stay in 213 BCE as he felt he had nothing to go back to in the present. He felt the world had moved on without him, and he was still grieving for his son Mutt Williams, who died during the Vietnam War. Yet, when Indy awoke in his apartment in 1969, he was surrounded by his goddaughter Helena Shaw, his good friend Sallah and Sallah’s children, and the love of his life, Marion Ravenwood. Through his adventures with Helena during the film and through this ending, Indy realized that there is still plenty to live for in 1969.

In every Indiana Jones movie, he always chooses the people he cares about over the relic. He chooses Marion over the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark, he chooses the Indian village over the Sankara Stones in Temple of Doom, he chooses his father Henry Jones Sr. over the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade, and he chooses Marion and Mutt over the interdimensional beings’ knowledge in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It would’ve felt disingenuous for Indy’s last adventure to end with him choosing the power of the relic over his loved ones.

Many heroes go out with a sacrifice in a blaze of glory, but it wouldn’t have made sense as Indy wouldn’t have saved anyone by choosing to stay in 213 BCE, and might’ve even altered the course of history for the worse if he stayed. The ending of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, particularly the final scene with Marion, shows how Indy is gradually getting back to his best self. He will always grieve for Mutt, but he can do so while choosing to live and being surrounded by the people who love and understand him.
