It looks like Trey Lance’s days with the San Francisco 49ers are numbered.
The quarterback, who was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was just named the team’s third-string quarterback behind Sam Darnold and starter Brock Purdy, and it is rumored the team will start to look at trade offers for him.
At first glance, it may seem like a failure of sorts, but commentator Chris Broussard says Lance should see it as a blessing in disguise because it should give him a shot at succeeding somewhere else.
Broussard encouraged the North Dakota State University product to get himself centered and adopt a positive mindset, via “First Things First” on FS1.
Trey Lance landed on @Chris_Broussard‘s very inspirational Under Duress list! “I know it’s rough. You needed a day to recalibrate. But now it’s back to the battle. Make the most out of this situation. I believe in you!”

In two pro seasons, Lance has played in a grand total of eight games while starting just four of them, and he has not played enough to show any evidence that’s he either a bust or a franchise QB in the making.
Going back further, he played only 19 games in three seasons at North Dakota State, and while playing in the FCS subdivision of the NCAA’s Division I, he faced lesser competition.
Quite simply, as many have observed, he isn’t developed enough to have a real shot at being a starting signal-caller in the NFL.
The 49ers gave up plenty of draft capital in order to acquire Lance, and there’s no telling how much value he will have on the open market right now.
It is Purdy’s team now, and for good reason, as they hope to finally make good on their “Quest For Six” this season.
