The 1 Villain Scarier Than Thanos Is Collecting Marvel’s Infinity Stones

Warning: Contains spoilers for Silver Surfer Legacy: Rebirth #1The one villain scarier than Thanos is collecting Marvel’s Infinity Stones. In both the Marvel Universe and the MCU, Thanos has made a career out of coveting the Infinity Stones–and he even assembled them all into the Infinity Gauntlet. Now, in Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy #1, a new villain is on the trail of the Stones–and what this new party can accomplish with them could put Thanos to shame.

Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy #1 reunites the superstar creative team of writer Ron Marz and artist Ron Lim, who are joined by inker Don Ho, colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr and lettered Joe Sabino. The Silver Surfer, along with Genis-Vell (the son of Mar-Vell) has arrived at Monster Isle, the then-home of Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch. Genis expresses a desire to see his father in action. He and the Surfer seek the Time Stone, with which they can go back and watch Mar-Vell fight. Genis is unsure of the plan, saying that not even the fearsome Gamora would use the Time Stone. Surfer brushes these concerns aside, taking the Stone. They then warp back to the past, to one of Mar-Vell’s biggest battles. Genis watches in awe, but matters quickly go south when it is revealed that his companion is not the Surfer—in reality it is Mephisto! Now possessing the Time Stone for himself, Mephisto warps Genis-Vell away.

Mephisto Is Marvel’s Ultimate Evil

Mephisto is, for all intents and purposes, Marvel’s version of the Christian devil. He has been a thorn in the side of nearly every major Marvel hero at some point–and he has particular ire for the Silver Surfer. First appearing in the Surfer’s 1960s solo title, Mephisto has become one of Marvel’s premier villains. It’s rumored he will make his MCU debut in the upcoming Ironheart series, where he will reportedly be played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Mephisto is power hungry and will do whatever it takes to capture innocent souls–and now he seeks the Infinity Stones for still unknown reasons.

Mephisto Started With the Correct Infinity Stone

Mephisto knows the power of the Infinity Stones firsthand. During the epic Infinity Gauntlet series, Mephisto acts as Thanos’ right-hand man, watching the grand and cosmic spectacle unfold before him. Mephisto has a front-row seat to everything, and even though Thanos is defeated, the villain still remembers how powerful the Stones are–and now seeks them for himself. Mephisto has started with the Time Stone; possession of this Stone makes it easier to grab the others. With this Stone, Mephisto can hop through time and easily steal the other Stones.

The big question then is: why does Mephisto want the Infinity Stones? Thanos wanted the Stones so he could wipe out half the universe’s population, and impress his crush Death. Mephisto saw all of this go down–including how Thanos was defeated. Thanos is a powerful character, but Mephisto is even more powerful–the embodiment of pure evil. Mephisto is also shrewder than the Mad Titan, and could potentially use the Stones even better than Thanos. The Infinity Stones in the hands of someone like Mephisto, who is even scarier and more evil than Thanos, is a scary prospect for the Marvel Universe.
