Adam Azim eyes fight against George Kambosos Jr

ADAM AZIM may only have had eight fights so far, but he is already confident of beating one of the world’s best super-lightweights.

The 21-year-old has made an eye-catching start to his career thanks to a bunch of spectacular performances that have many tipping him as a future world champion.

Azim was due to be fighting on Friday night at York Hall against Ukraine’s Aram Fanyan in the headline slot on Sky Sports. However, an infection in his left hand forced ‘The Assassin’ to withdraw but hopes his ninth contest can be rescheduled.

“Everything was going so well in the camp. I was looking sharp, strong, and then this happened in sparring. I come out and my hand ballooned up,” Azim told Sky Sports. “I couldn’t even spar because that’s how bad my hand was.

“I had to withdraw because the doctor’s choice was for me to not fight.”

Adam’s older brother, and unbeaten welterweight, Hassan 6-0 (3) features on the card now headlined by the Frazer Clarke-Mariusz Clarke heavyweight contest.

With a return in August or September possible for Adam Azim he hopes to be as active as possible towards the end of 2023. One opponent in particular he would like to face is George Kambosos. The Australian is best known for his stunning upset win over Teofimo Lopez in November 2021. That victory put the Sydney native at the top of the lightweight division and despite being one weight class it is a fight that Azim wants.

“I’d give George Kambosos a good fight,” Azim said. “I was surprised that [Devin] Haney didn’t stop him because of the amount of shots that he was actually hitting George Kambosos with.

“I was surprised that he didn’t go down. But Haney is not really a power-puncher. He’s more of a skilled fighter.

“He’s a perfect fight for me.”

Kambosos faces British opposition on July 22 when Maxi Hughes will be in the opposite corner for their lightweight bout at the Firelake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
