A beloved horror comedy movie from the 1990s has made its way onto the Netflix Top 10 chart as the Halloween season kicks into high gear.
Casper is now trending on Netflix as Halloween approaches. The 1995 horror-comedy movie is based on the character Casper the Friendly Ghost, who debuted in a series of theatrical cartoons in 1945 and is now the lead of a massive multimedia franchise. The movie follows ghost therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci), who move into a haunted house where Kat befriends the young ghost Casper (voiced by Malachi Pearson and played as a human by Devon Sawa).
On Netflix‘s daily Top 10 for Friday, October 6, 1995’s Casper has taken the No. 6 spot. It is by a wide margin the oldest movie on the current Top 10, as the second-oldest is 2010’s Megamind. The rest of the list is made up of more contemporary titles including the new Netflix originals Reptile and Nowhere.
Why Casper is the Perfect Movie For Halloween 2023
There are most likely quite a few reasons why so many people are being drawn to Casper this year. The first is that the movie has been newly added to Netflix, joining their vast library of titles on October 1. However, the family-friendly nature that made it a hit in 1995 (earning $287.9 million off its $55 million budget) likely also appeals to families who want an alternative to the more intense current theatrical horror offerings such as Saw X and The Exorcist: Believer.
However, the Casper cast is also perfectly attuned to contemporary audiences who want to explore previous projects from their favorite genre stars. For instance, Devon Sawa, whose brief cameo when Casper gains the ability to return to his human form is a pivotal moment in Casper‘s romantic storyline, is currently starring in the horror franchise TV show Chucky. In that show, he has played multiple different characters who have faced off against the titular killer doll.
Casper star Christina Ricci has also had a huge comeback in recent years. The actor, who also portrayed Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family movies in the early ’90s, recently played Marilyn Thornhill on the popular Netflix show Wednesday in addition to her starring role in the Showtime hit Yellowjackets. Nostalgia for the star’s earlier works in the genre has likely driven a large part of the viewership for the ghostly classic.
