Canadians Andreescu, Fernandez draw tough opponents at French Open

Canada’s top two women’s tennis players will be underdogs in their first-round matches at the French Open.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont. will face No. 18 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, while Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que. will battle No. 21 seed Magda Linette of Poland.

The draw was held Thursday.

Azarenka, 33, reached the Australian Open semis earlier this year, while Linette was a French Open semifinalist in 2021.

Rebecca Marino of Vancouver will face Russian lefty Diana Shraider.

On the men’s side, No. 10 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal faces world No. 130 Fabio Fognini of Italy.

No. 26 seed Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont. meets world No. 52 Brandon Nakashima of San Diego. The American beat Shapovalov in a second-round match last year at Wimbledon.

The main draw starts Monday.
