It’s Monday morning in New York City and a $37 million biometric employee timekeeping system for MTA employees is just collecting dust.

The pricey system, which scans fingerprints to clock in and out, was purchased and installed four years ago to combat overtime abuse, but hasn’t been used since the start of the pandemic. So now the costly investment is just sitting idle, and the MTA remains vulnerable to time theft.
