Welcome to Wednesday morning in New York City where a proposed state bill would force chronic speedy drivers to put a speed limiter on their vehicles.
Advocates and elected officials gathered next to a particularly dangerous section of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn to introduce the legislation that would have drivers who rack up six or more speeding tickets in a year or 11 or more points on their license in 18 months install the system in their cars which would make it so they’re not able to go more than five miles over the speed limit.
Here’s what else is happening:
- A new anti-rat rule went into effect yesterday for businesses that serve food, mandating their trash be put in a garbage can with a lid.
- Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood is set to incur a slew of new residents thanks to rezoning, but that influx of people could put an unmanageable strain on the area’s sewers.
- Canyon Ranch, a wellness spa resort that has been around since 1979 and features classes like paddleboard yoga and embodied astrology, is looking to expand to locations in cities across the country, including New York, in a break from their woodsy-centered model.
- Warner Bros apologized for an insensitive tweet reply from an official Barbie movie account to a Barbenheimer meme that featured atomic bomb images.
- Feeling lucky? These five lottery stores have sold the most winning tickets in the city. Queens and Brooklyn are tied with two locations each, the other is in Manhattan.
- Fast-fashion retailers are adapting to a world where sustainability is in with brands like Zara, H&M and Uniqlo launching repair services for clothing.
- It turns out New York is the city that consumes the most cannabis in the world, according to a new study, with Sydney, Australia coming in second.
- And finally, the ripe age of 98:
