It’s a hot and sunny Tuesday morning in New York City where the Hudson River is not the toxic, polluted mess it once was — and an endurance swimmer is setting out to prove that.
Lewis Pugh is swimming the length of the more than 300-mile long waterway to shed light on a Hudson River revival campaign, and to put some pressure on policymakers about the importance of protecting the world’s rivers amid climate change. He’s hoping to end his Tour de Hudson in Battery Park on September 13, just in time for a session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Here’s what else is going on:
- School is back in session this week, and the city announced a mandate requiring elementary school students to be locked in their buildings as part of a new security plan.
- If you must eat the food at a stadium, make sure it’s Citi Field, which was just ranked as having the best.
- The union representing Staten Island Ferry workers has finally been able to reach an agreement for a new contract with the city after 13 years. With more than a decade of stagnant wages, employees will now see a major pay increase.
- A Crown Heights bodega is your usual corner store by day, but by night, it becomes the setting for an experimental live play.
- As much as we complain about the never-ending maze that is an IKEA showroom, it turns out when they were taken away, we missed them.
- Eric Ulrich, the former NYC Buildings Commissioner who was charged under a sealed indictment accusing him of corruption-related crimes, just self-published a children’s book called “If Pets Could Vote…”
- The Electric Zoo festival was a complete mess this weekend. After opening night festivities were canceled on Friday, chaos erupted on Sunday as concertgoers were turned away due to overcrowding.
- And finally, first round draft pick:
