The NBA has been in good hands in recent years, as a number of new stars have emerged, while there has been an explosion of scoring and pace that has made the league’s product more exciting than it has been in decades.

Now, a potential generational talent is entering the league in Victor Wembanyama, the French phenom who has been called arguably the best draft prospect in history and certainly the best since LeBron James in 2003.

As expected, the San Antonio Spurs made him the No. 1 pick in Thursday’s draft.

Needless to say, their fans are excited.

However, there are those who feel he is overrated and that he won’t quite pan out the way others are expecting him to.

Wembanyama is officially listed at 7-foot-2, but some sources have stated that he is as tall as 7-foot-4 or even 7-foot-5.

In addition to being a monstrous rim protector and a good rebounder, he has the type of ball-handling skills and fluidity that are virtually unheard of for a man of his size.

Perhaps only 7-foot-4 Ralph Sampson, who himself was a massively hyped prospect in the early 1980s, had the type of ball-handling skills that could rival Wembanyama’s.

The 19-year-old’s offensive skill set is a work in progress, but he showed major improvement this season in France, and he is an outstanding free-throw shooter, which could foreshadow his potential as an outside shooter.

With him on board, the Spurs can continue their tradition of excellent big men that started with David Robinson in 1989 and possibly even before that with Artis Gilmore in the early 1980s.
