Director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has teased some exciting details about Superman’s suit in Superman: Legacy. Set to star David Corenswet as the latest live-action incarnation of the classic DC superhero, the upcoming Superman reboot will also mark the first movie release in the DC Universe’s broad reset under the tenure of Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran. Earlier this year, Gunn had revealed he had been looking at “hundreds of designs” for what would ultimately become Corenswet’s Superman suit, and the final decision was proving far from simple.
While audiences are still yet to receive their first glimpse of Corenswet’s final costume, Gunn is still being prompted for details from eager fans.
Over on Threads, a user named @durrellb.r asked whether Superman’s suit will “be more classic, modern or something totally new and different?” While the director did not provide specific details, Gunn simply replied “all of the above”, suggesting the final costume design will encompass classic and modern attributes.
How Superman’s Suit Has Evolved In Live Action Movies
Just like his look in the original comics, over the years Superman’s suit has undergone several updates and evolutions in his live-action outings. While the bright blue and red suit worn by Christopher Reeve in 1979’s Superman: The Movie may have gone on to become the image most commonly associated with the character’s classic look, 1951’s Superman and the Mole Men was actually the first time the character had made the leap from serials to a full-length feature film. Serving as a trial run for George Reeves’ television series Adventures of Superman, the first ever suit in movies was brown and grey, colors which shot better in the movie’s original black and white format.

The Man of Steel: History of the Superman Suit
As ‘Man of Steel’ launches a brand new Superman suit, we look back at the most memorable versions – and those we’d sooner forget.
When director Richard Donner eventually sought to reintroduce the character to movie-going audiences, he harkened back to the costume design commonly featured in the comic books of the day. Featuring red trunks and bright colors, Reeve’s suit perfectly echoed the comic pulp origins of the character. It would even be responsible for introducing the lore behind the S-symbol’s association with the House of El. In future iterations, however, the Superman suit’s bold and bright nature would gradually give way to more muted colors and a sleeker, more modernized look.
Beginning with Brandon Routh’s toned-down color scheme and modern fabrics, and culminating in Henry Cavill’s completely trunkless Superman design, the more recent versions of the Superman suit have in many ways reflected the character’s onscreen transition from a symbol of boundless and irrepressible optimism to a far more grounded and intense take on the Last Son of Krypton. While it is not yet clear what approach Gunn will be taking with Corenswet’s suit, his most recent comments would suggest the Superman: Legacy costume will continue to pay homage to all that which has come before it.
