A man is accused of pointing a gun with a laser sight at an off-duty Chicago police officer before the cop shot and wounded him over the weekend in Brighton Park, authorities said.
The officer was not injured in the incident, which occurred around 11:10 p.m. Friday in the 2800 block of West 47th Street, police said.
The officer had noticed an SUV following him and stopped outside a fast food restaurant, according to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. Authorities say Carlos Negrete pulled next to the officer’s car and pointed a gun at him “after a brief exchange of words,” the agency said.
Negrete fled, and the officer called 911 while trying to follow the car, but lost sight of it, COPA said in a statement.
A short time later, Negrete arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound “and reported they had been shot near the address of the incident,” COPA said.
He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault Saturday, according to police.
Negrete, 25, was ordered held on $200,000 bond during a hearing Sunday.
COPA said surveillance video captured some of the incident, but it was trying to obtain other video. Anyone with information or video is asked to call (312) 746-3609.
The officer was placed on administrative duties for 30 days, as is routine.
