Man Utd transfer news: Fabrizio Romano reveals United are targeting a unique player to learn from Caicedo error

Manchester United’s transfer policy will be tweaked in the summer, Fabrizio Romano has revealed, with the Old Trafford club keeping a “special eye” on a type of player they have often missed out on in the past.

Romano has said that the Red Devils will seek to bolster their ranks with promising young players from around the world and will use Nice as a development club that can develop these stars on loan.

This multi-club model is similar to what Chelsea have with Strasbourg and Manchester City have with their network of clubs around the world.

Romano explains: “Manchester United under Ineos will try to work to bring in some top talents at the club. Young players to move into the Man Utd galaxy because now they can obviously use the connection they have at Nice in France. They can have some players at the club and give them the opportunity to go to Nice to develop there.

“Manchester United will have a special eye on players around the world. They feel that they’ve had many opportunities in the recent past. Just an example, Moise Caicedo came very close to signing with them years ago when he was still in Ecuador for something like five million. Man Utd decided against that.

“Obviously, you can’t sign all the best talents. Man Utd still do a very good job with players who come directly from the academy like Alejandro Garnacho, Kobee Mainoo, and others, but in the market from other countries, they will keep a special eye to that and the connection to Nice could be an important point.”

New market for Man Utd

United have not typically operated in the market for ‘talents’ in the past, preferring to buy their players first-team ready.

New owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is seeking to change the club works, though, stripping out the previous recruitment team to replace it with a more efficient model.

Even a signing like Rasmus Hojlund differed from the type of deal Romano is talking about in that the Atalanta striker was signed with an eye to playing lots of minutes this season.

Instead, the plan for the future is to sign up players and develop them to become Manchester United standard, using Nice in Ligue 1 as a finishing school.
