The Muppets Mayhem has been cancelled after season 1 on Disney+, ending plans for a potential Muppetverse on the platform. The series follows junior executive Nora Singh at a record label where she must help Muppet band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem record their first album. The show was met with generally positive reviews, though it was unclear how successful it was on the streaming platform.

Now, Deadline has confirmed that, despite Disney developing a critically praised Muppets series, The Muppets Mayhem has been axed following season 1. While the series managed to do well critically, Disney+ never revealed how many viewers watched the show when it first premiered in May. This decision also spells doom for creator Adam F. Goldberg’s plans to create a Muppet franchise similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What’s Next For The Muppets Franchise?

Gonzo in Muppets Haunted Mansion

Disney+ has become the home for new content from The Muppets since the platform first launched. Alongside the most recent cancelled show, the platform is also home to the short-lived variety series Muppets Now, as well as the television special Muppets Haunted Mansion. Given the production of unconnected media in the franchise for the last few years, it’s likely this will continue to be the case with new shows and movies going forward.

Although The Muppets Mayhem‘s musical cameos and comedic tone gave it positive reception, it appeared to have failed in garnering a large enough audience to get renewed. Unfortunately, given the series’ focus on less recognizable characters aside from Animal, it was destined to garner a niche viewership. This likely means future projects in the franchise will include more well-known puppets like Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, or Fozzie Bear.

While a new project has yet to be announced, it will likely focus more on some of the more iconic characters. This may not be good news for unique shows like The Muppets Mayhem, but given the franchise’s longevity, it’s likely a similar, unique project will be greenlit in the future. Only time will tell what comes next for these beloved characters.
