Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller has closed his deal to join director Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic film Michael. The actor is confirmed to take on the role of Jackson’s attorney John Branca.
Branca shepherded Jackson’s career as he transitioned from a singing sensation in a boy band to the world-renowned mega star that he became.
Michael producer Graham King shared in a statement: “Miles is a compelling screen presence, whom I’ve admired since watching him in Whiplash. He’s the perfect actor to capture John’s enigmatic persona. From our earliest development conversations, it was clear the emotional connection that John still has to Michael. He graciously allowed us to use him as a character in the film and I’m thrilled that it’s Miles who will portray a relationship that extended over 3 decades, through Michael’s greatest triumphs and most difficult days.”
Fuqua added: “Miles’ finely tuned skills as an actor are up to the challenge of playing a man who is being examined for the pivotal role he played in Michael Jackson’s life. He is the perfect actor to disappear into the role of John Branca.”
Teller joins Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, as Michael, Colman Domingo as patriarch Joe Jackson, Nia Long as mother Katherine Jackson, as well as 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi, who will be playing a young version of Michael.
The movie is said to be “an in-depth portrayal of a complicated man who became the King of Pop. It will bring to life Jackson’s most iconic performances as it gives an informed insight into the entertainer’s artistic process and personal life.”
The script for the film was written by John Logan, who previously wrote films such as Gladiator and The Aviator.
The movie is set to be released on April 18, 2025. The movie is currently shooting.
