More rain forecast in NYC area until Wednesday, with coastal flooding possible

Don’t put away that umbrella just yet: the National Weather Service forecasts more rain into Wednesday and possibly beyond.

Rip current and coastal flood advisories are in effect from southern New Jersey to Montauk, Long Island, and as far north as Hudson and Essex counties.

“Expect some ponding on the roads as you’re driving into work,” said Jim Connolly, a National Weather Service meteorologist. “We’re not expecting any major flooding or anything, but the roads will be wet and some of the poor drainage areas will have a little bit of water.”

An inch of rain fell in Central Park, and two inches in eastern Long Island, over the weekend.

The remnants of tropical storm Ophelia are still south of New York City and moving slowly east. The storm is expected to drift south and away from the area Tuesday afternoon, granting small breaks of sunshine.

The rain is expected to stop between Tuesday and Wednesday.

“It’s generally going to be a steady light rain with pockets of moderate to maybe locally heavy rain at times through the day [Monday],” Connolly said.

This summer has been wetter than normal, with more than 14 inches of rain recorded between June and August – two inches more than recent averages, according to National Weather Service data.

With 7.11 inches of rain recorded so far, September could break the monthly rain accumulation record of 8.65 inches set in 2021.
