Ben Simmons only played in 42 games last season for his Brooklyn Nets due to yet another injury sidelining him.
During that time, he had his worst season yet, averaging 6.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.
Still, the Nets claim he is a part of their future plans and will be back to his normal self soon enough.
Nets GM Sean Marks commented on Simmons while visiting the NBA Summer League, via ClutchPoints on Twitter.
Marks said that Simmons is not yet practicing hard against other teammates on the floor but he is progressing well and is in great “physical shape.”
He added that Simmons is doing well mentally as well and is “chomping at the bit to get back out there.”
Nets GM Sean Marks on Ben Simmons:
“He’s not doing 3-on-3 or 5-on-5 yet. I was down there 2 weeks ago with him and with our training staff and saw the progress. I’m happy to report that he’s in great physical shape and also mentally. He seems to be chomping at the bit to get… pic.twitter.com/AUxYlQJrql

The general manager said that the team is not going to rush Simmons’ return, so it’s not entirely clear if they expect him to be suited up when the new season kicks off in October.
It’s also not clear what sort of role the three-time All-Star will have with these new-look Nets.
The last time Simmons played, the team was undergoing some major changes.
They were losing both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and adding a slew of younger talent instead.
Simmons didn’t get any time to play with those new recruits so no one knows how he’ll fit into this new rotation.
A lot is riding on next season for Simmons, just as a lot was riding on last season.
The man has a lot to prove to Nets and NBA fans, as well as himself.
It has now been several years since he has played like a former number one overall draft pick.
Will he return to greatness once this current injury is really and truly taken care of?
