NYPD: Onlooker fired shot in Midtown subway station during attempted robbery

At least one gunshot was fired by an apparent onlooker Tuesday night during an alleged robbery in a Manhattan subway station, police said.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to officials.

Police said 49-year-old Matthew Roesch was attempting to rob a 40-year-old woman at around 9:15 p.m. on the northbound N train platform in the 49th Street Subway station in Midtown.

Another man got involved, according to police, and fired a shot. It’s unclear if he was aiming at anyone, or if he was trying to deter the would-be thief, police said. No one was struck.

The shooter fled, and Roesch was arrested for the attempted robbery.
