The Texas Rangers got 30.1 innings from star offseason signing Jacob deGrom, and after the announcement that he will undergo Tommy John surgery, he won’t be contributing anytime soon.
You would think that under that scenario, the Rangers’ rotation would be a disaster.
Well, think again.
They have the second-best ERA in baseball at 3.13 as a unit, even with deGrom pitching so little.
There are several reasons behind the group’s success, but two of them are definitely Nathan Eovaldi and Jon Gray.
Look at what they have achieved.

Gray was a free agent signing before the 2022 campaign, and Eovaldi came in this offseason.
We knew they were talented, but they are also injury-prone.
Thankfully, they have stayed healthy, and the results have been magnificent.
We could also include Dane Dunning to the list, as he has a cool 2.52 ERA.
A trade acquisition a few years ago, he is more of a player development success story, but those are even more valuable to a roster.
Martin Perez and Andrew Heaney have been more solid than spectacular, but their presence has also been very valuable.
Now without deGrom, it’s possible the Rangers seek a starter before the deadline, but with a 40-21 record and the best run differential in baseball, they are in really good shape.
