This Actor’s Hit 2023 Movie & TV Show Secretly Make Him One Of The Year’s Biggest Stars

Summary

  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach had a successful year in 2023, with acclaimed roles in The Bear and No Hard Feelings, establishing himself as one of the year’s biggest stars.
  • Moss-Bachrach’s portrayal of Richie in The Bear season 2 was exceptional, making him the most relatable and funniest character, and contributing to the show’s huge success.
  • Despite his limited role in No Hard Feelings, Moss-Bachrach showcased his comedic skills and could have been utilized more effectively to enhance the movie’s box office performance, given his success in The Bear.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach has had a huge 2023 both in the TV sphere and the movie landscape, and these two projects prove he’s one of the year’s biggest winners. Until 2022, Moss-Bachrach had a modestly successful career as a television actor, being a series regular on shows like The Punisher and Girls, and having small roles on procedural crime series like Crime Scene Investigation. His profile gained more attention by playing the villainous Arvel Skeen in Andor too. However, ironically, it wasn’t being a part of one of the biggest franchises in the world that earned Moss-Bachrach universal acclaim; it was the Chicago-based FX drama series, The Bear.

The Bear’s first season was hugely acclaimed and has been nominated for a ton of Emmys, including Moss-Bachrach being nominated for Best Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Moss-Bachrach plays Richie in The Bear, a family friend of Carmy, who is trying to turn his deceased brother’s Italian beef sandwich store into a Michelin-star restaurant. However, unlike Carmy, Richie doesn’t have any skills; he can’t cook, he’s lazy, he’s struggling with his divorce, and he’s going through an existential crisis. Richie is the most relatable and funniest character in The Bear, and season 2, along with No Hard Feelings, proved that Moss-Bachrach is one of 2023’s biggest stars.

The Bear & No Hard Feelings Prove Ebon Moss-Bachrach Is One Of 2023’s Best Stars

Gary with a tow truck in No Hard Feelings

In 2023, Moss-Bachrach starred in The Bear season 2 and featured in the Jennifer Lawrence-starring No Hard Feelings. The Bear season 2 went above and beyond what was expected of it despite audiences already having sky-high expectations. That was mostly thanks to Richie. The character was superbly written, and Moss-Bachrach brought the depressed, loudmouth who leeches off of others to life in a way few other actors could. Episodes like “Forks” made audiences root for and even cry for Ritchie despite his shortcomings. Overall, season 2 was a huge hit, with a viewership of 853 million minutes streamed in its premiere week (via THR).

Moss-Bachrach plays Gary, one of Maddie’s (Lawrence) ex-boyfriends in No Hard Feelings, and he’s struggling to come to terms with the fact that she doesn’t want to be with him. No Hard Feelings is one of 2023’s most notable movies, as it marks Jennifer Lawrence’s first movie since Don’t Look Up, and it’s a hilarious R-rated raunchy comedy; the kind they don’t make that often anymore. No Hard Feelings made $87 million against a budget of $45 million, and it’ll likely find a much bigger audience on streaming. Moss-Bachrach’s acting ability translates to the big screen despite having previously struggled to earn non-television roles.

The Bear Season 2 Proved No Hard Feelings Underused Ebon Moss-Bachrach

Richie at the counter in The Bear

No Hard Feelings was released just one day after The Bear season 2, and the movie could have greatly benefitted from Moss-Bachrach’s starring role in the FX show. However, while the actor’s role in the comedy movie is hilarious, it’s also extremely limited. Despite arguably being the best part of The Bear season 2, Moss-Bachrach doesn’t have more than three key scenes in No Hard Feelings. As a result, the actor’s role in the 2023 movie was underwhelming, especially given that he appeared in the trailer.

Based on The Bear’s success, the movie could have potentially earned more at the box office if the studio had taken advantage of its perfectly timed casting. This is especially the case given that Gary is essentially a comedic version of Richie in The Bear. Gary is upset over losing a relationship, which is the same thing that Richie deals with in The Bear season 2. As seen in the horrific The Bear Christmas episode and in “Forks,” Ebon Moss-Bachrach is great at playing the heartbroken character, and he could have fully explored a more comedy-oriented version of that in No Hard Feelings.
