Little Italy may be 6,000 miles from Rome, but when you’re staying in San Diego’s Italian quarter, it only seems fitting to stay in a hotel with a European name — like La Pensione.
Built in the early 1990s, this hotel boasts 68 affordable, compact guest rooms in a throwback palette of silvers, grays and white faux leather. But the location is so marvelous, you’ll be spending next to no time in your room.
La Pensione sits in the heart of Little Italy, perched on a corner just across from the Piazza della Famiglia, a 10,000-square-foot pedestrian-only plaza lined with shops, restaurants and alfresco seating that opened in 2018. Some of the city’s hottest restaurants are just down the street. The Gaslamp Quarter and the waterfront with its historic ships are within walking distance. And when you return in the evening, still buzzing from a day of play — and too much walking — La Pensione’s comfortable beds await.
ZZZ’S: Rooms are nicely equipped with queen-sized beds and white faux-leather headboards. Some rooms offer city views, and some have small balconies overlooking all the revelry below.
SPLASHES: The en suite bathrooms are lined with moody dark gray or white tile, and the walk-in showers have rainfall shower heads.
EXTRAS: This is an incredibly parking-challenged neighborhood, but La Pensione has its own parking garage ($30). Space is limited — it’s first come, first serve — and the spaces are small, so don’t expect to park your SUV or van at 6 p.m., but your compact car will find a safe spot here if you come early.
