The Reacher season 2 premiere sheds light on the real reason Alan Richtson’s Jack Reacher left the military. Having grown up in a military family, bouncing from one military base to another, there was an assumption that Jack would feel right at home as part of the service. Aside from that, he was also effective in his job, which could have further motivated him to stay. Instead, the Amazon Prime Video original series created by Nick Santora based on Lee Child’s books sees him oddly wandering the US with very minimal personal belongings.
After his stint in Margrave, Georgia, where he teamed up with Roscoe Conklin (Willa Fitzgerald) and Oscar Finlay (Malcolm Goodwin) to reclaim the town from the evil Kliners in season 1, Jack continued his hobo lifestyle. After the time jump in Reacher season 2, the new year picks him up in Arkansas, which is significantly far from where he was last seen. That being said, it’s still unclear why exactly he left a highly-regimented life in the military to have an unstructured carefree life as a wanderer, although Reacher season 2 finally sheds some light on it.
Reacher Left The Military To Find Freedom
As Jack mentions in Reacher season 2, episode 3, “Picture Says a Thousand Words,” he left the military because he felt like it was a cage. He doesn’t get into specifics on why it started feeling to constrict him, but it’s possible that it may have been a long time coming. As someone who grew up in that environment, he may have felt the pressure to cope with its ever-changing nature, not to mention its strict guidelines had just gotten too much. So, with enough finances to spare, he decided to leave it all behind.

Reacher’s Reasons For Quitting The Military Change Lee Child’s Books
Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Child’s Jack Reacher changes the reason why its titular character left the military. In its print source, Jack’s departure was more complicated. In the 16th book, The Affair, his final mission was revealed, but it turned out to be a complicated one, resulting in a political fall-out that he just didn’t want to really deal with. Disillusioned by the unearthed corruption in the service, he thought that it was better if he lived his life outside of it.
Deviating from its source material shouldn’t be surprising, however. Santora did say that they are not beholden to what is in Child’s books. Instead, they’re more of a guiding light creatively. That being said, just because it seems like Reacher season 2 has a different explanation for Jack’s departure from the military, it doesn’t mean that they will never adapt to what happens in The Affair. As someone who doesn’t like talking much about his personal life, it’s still possible that there’s more to his military exit than he has led on.
