WSU volleyball tops UW to sweep season matchup

Magda Jehlarova finished with a team-leading 11 kills, Pia Timmer added 10 kills with nine digs, and No. 11 Washington State swept Washington 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.

The Cougars (24-7, 14-6 Pac-12) hit .326 (44-13-95) on the night as they finished off a season sweep of their in-state rivals without dropping a single set, giving head coach Jen Greeny the highest win total (24) of her 13-year career with the win in Friday’s regular-season finale.

May Pertofsky was the kill leader of the match for Washington (16-15, 7-13 Pac-12) with 14.

SPU men drop tight one to ranked team

The Seattle Pacific University men’s basketball team led 15th-ranked MSU Denver with 33 seconds left before late free throws lifted the Roadrunners to a narrow 77-75 win Friday in Denver.

The game featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes.

Shaw Anderson led the Falcons with 17 points on 8-for-17 shooting. He pulled down six rebounds and had four assists. Owen Moriarty and Kyle Luttinen scored 15 points each. Morarity hit three three-pointers, while Luttinen made five.

Women’s basketball

• Host Colorado Christian outscored SPU women by a 25-2 margin during the second quarter and rang up 23 straight points spanning the second and third Friday afternoon, going on to a 68-41 victory on the first day of the Metro State Thanksgiving Classic women’s basketball tournament in Lakewood, Colo.

Redshirt freshman wing Grace Leasure led the Falcons (1-4) with nine points, and junior forward Olivia Mayer added seven points, four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

But after trailing 40-15 at halftime and 48-15 early in the third quarter, Seattle Pacific simply could not climb back into it.

Hockey

• The Saskatoon Blades broke a tie late to drop the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 at the accesso ShoWare Center. The game was tied 1-1 when Saskatoon scored with 68 seconds remaining. Lukas Hanson chipped in the game winner, just past the outstretched leg of T-birds goalie Scott Ratzlaff, who turned aside 19 of 21 shots and has now stopped 140 of the last 146 shots he’s faced over a four-game span.

• The Everett Silvertips topped the Portland Winterhawks 6-3 at Angel of the Winds Arena. Everett was down 3-0 after the first before roaring back.

On Thursday, the Evertips aquired forward Will Jamieson from the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for a 2027 7th-round pick in the WHL Draft.
