Eddie Munson and Chrissy Cunningham’s budding friendship was a major highlight of Stranger Things season 4, but their respective deaths are made even sadder following new details surrounding a key flashback. Joseph Quinn and Grace Van Dien portrayed the Stranger Things season 4 cast members, but both of their arcs were cut short, much to the dismay of viewers. Chrissy, of course, was one of Vecna’s innocent victims, while Eddie was tragically killed fighting a horde of Demobats in the Upside Down during a mission with the Hawkins group.
On the outside, Eddie and Chrissy couldn’t be more different, with the former being a metalhead and leader of the Hellfire Club while the latter was portrayed as “the queen of Hawkins High” and school cheerleader. Still, Chrissy went to Eddie for help when her hallucinations through Vecna’s powers worsened. While meeting in the woods, Eddie detailed the first time he and Chrissy spent time together, specifically at the middle school talent show, where she performed a cheerleading routine, and he played with his band, Corroded Coffin. The time down memory lane was sweet, but flashback details make their fates more tragic.
Eddie & Chrissy’s Stranger Things Season 4 Flashback Moment Puts Their Deaths In A New Perspective
In Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus, the Eddie prequel story set two years before the events of season 4, more details regarding the middle school talent show are revealed. It turns out that Eddie performed with his band in eighth grade, but during the show, he shared a bonding moment with Chrissy that the season 4 sequence in the woods didn’t mention, making their connection more special. While hiding out on the catwalk, Eddie encountered Chrissy, who was also trying to stay hidden. After Eddie shared that he hoped his dad would show up, Chrissy kindly said she would cheer for him if he didn’t show.
Seeing as Eddie’s dad had a history of not being there for his son, he never showed up to the talent show, but Eddie was able to find support in Chrissy and vice versa regarding her perfectionist mother. Though Stranger Things season 4 implied that they only performed at the same show, the actual event carried more weight with the pair’s history. That said, it’s a shame they couldn’t become actual friends sooner, seeing as their perceived social circles didn’t truly define them. Before either of them could escape Hawkins, they both met grim fates, with Chrissy being Stranger Things season 4’s biggest missed opportunity.
Eddie Felt A Stronger Connection To Chrissy Than Stranger Things Season 4 Implied
Interestingly, Flight of Icarus also goes deeper into Eddie’s perception of Chrissy and how it changes over time. When Eddie initially recognizes her as a sophomore, he claims she’s a “fundamentally uninteresting package” until he realizes that the girl he encountered at the talent show is still present under the popular persona she’s hiding behind. Chrissy stands up for Eddie and his “freaks” against their bullies even when she doesn’t have full power as a “queen bee” just yet. Eddie sees that she’s still approachable, something that he holds onto, as seen in Stranger Things season 4’s timeline of events.
Despite their different paths, Eddie still had a soft spot for Chrissy in Stranger Things season 4. He wouldn’t have offered to sell her drugs or go out of his way to help her had she not made such an impression on him years prior. While Chrissy may have been distracted by her situation in season 4 to fully remember their past, she still managed to instantly connect with Eddie. Sadly, that strong connection ended with Eddie witnessing Chrissy’s violent death before meeting the same fate shortly after, preventing any future bonding moments for the pair.
Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus was published by Penguin Random House and released on October 31st, 2023.
