A “Supersized” White Lotus Season 3 May Be Hard To Sell Without 1 Recurring Character

Summary

  • The absence of Tanya McQuoid poses a major obstacle for The White Lotus season 3, as her character was a highlight and drew viewers to the show.
  • Keeping the show fresh and avoiding redundancy is a challenge for season 3, as the previous seasons followed a similar structure and themes. Creating new characters and exploring new topics will be important.
  • To overcome Tanya’s absence, season 3 can break from the established formula by adding more dramatic content with multiple timelines, introducing a well-known star, or bringing back a character tied to Tanya’s storyline for closure and added depth.

The White Lotus‘ creator, Mike White, has revealed that the show’s third season will be bigger and crazier; however, the absence of one particular character might complicate things. The HBO series has recently become a topic of conversation since more details about its new season have come out. The location, Belinda’s return from the first season, and a larger number of episodes have already been confirmed. With the SAG-AFTRA strike finally over, more casting announcements are expected soon, with the hope for additional previous character returns after The White Lotus season 2 finale.

Although The White Lotus‘ first and second seasons’ events are included within the same universe, the series is an anthology as every season is centered around a different location, guests, and storylines. While the events in the first season happen in Hawaii, the second is set entirely in Sicily. So far, there’s only one link that brings the series together, besides the titular hotel group. Tanya McQuoid is the only major character appearing in both seasons and has become the image and a centerpiece of the show. However, her fate in season 2 makes The White Lotus season 3’s new update more worrying.

Greg, Tanya’s romantic interest, also appears in both seasons of The White Lotus; however, he is not a major character.

A “Supersized” White Lotus Season 3 Will Struggle Without Tanya McQuoid

Jennifer Coolidge was a major part of the show’s success

Tanya McQuoid became an instant hit after The White Lotus was released in 2021. It is not only that the character is perfectly written, but she is also incredibly portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge. However, Tanya’s death at the end of season 2, though tragic and certainly one of the show’s biggest moments, could potentially end the series’ death, too. Considering that Tanya’s comeback to The White Lotus would demand a prequel, and that isn’t the case so far, her absence is a major obstacle to overcome. Tanya was the first season’s highlight, and her return was a major draw for season 2.

Taking into consideration that the series mixes drama and comedy, Tanya’s character is the cornerstone of the show’s humor, becoming a living meme. However, her story is also one of the most dramatic and compelling, as it has many layers. Additionally, her comeback in season 2 gives a certain continuity to a series that changes its entire cast and location in between seasons. Her story was also already deeply developed and had proved to be engaging, something very important when thinking of a longer season that demands more minutes and more things to happen. Without her, it is hard to think of a bigger delivery being properly sustained.

Keeping The White Lotus Fresh May Be Difficult Regardless Of Tanya’s Absence

Even though Tanya’s absence is one of the biggest obstacles to overcome, that is not The White Lotus season 3‘s only challenge. Every show, and especially anthology series that renew all of their characters every season, needs to stay fresh, thrilling, and unpredictable. The White Lotus has already repeated the same structure in Hawaii and Sicily as the story starts with a mysterious death and then continues to tell the series of events that led to that tragic end. That first hook is sustained because the seasons are rather short, and thinking of more episodes makes one wonder if that premise will endure.

Furthermore, plot structure is not the only challenge regarding season 3’s content; the overarching themes are also something to worry about. Unhappy young couples and dysfunctional families are themes present in both previous seasons. Considering the show’s essence and initial proposal, they are likely to re-appear in this new delivery. However, if they are not moved out of the focus, they can turn the show dull. The fact that there is a certain stereotype of all-inclusive hotel guests is a limiting factor when crafting new characters. The challenge of this season lies in finding a way to create new characters that can bring new topics to the conversation.

How Season 3 Can Work Without Tanya McQuoid

The White Lotus needs to break from its established formula

The White Lotus season 3’s longer and bigger season can still present some opportunities to overcome Tanya’s absence. Firstly, considering The White Lotus‘s new location in Thailand and Eastern religions being a theme, turning the plot less linear and adding more timelines could be a way of generating more dramatic content. Secondly, a well-known star playing a great character could be a fine option as a hook both for people who have already watched the series and audiences new to the show. On the other hand, the return of a character tied to Tanya’s storyline could be beneficial to bring closure to her death and add more interesting layers to the plot.
