Summary

  • Rick and Morty season 7, episode 10 took a darker turn for the main characters, forcing Morty to face his fear of relying on Rick and learn to stand on his own.
  • The post-credits scene revealed that Mr. Poopybutthole didn’t learn from his past mistakes and instead chose to escape to an alternate dimension where he and Amy never broke up.
  • While Morty and Rick showed personal growth and development, Mr. Poopybutthole’s refusal to change highlighted the contrast between the main characters and supporting ones.

While Rick and Morty season 7, episode 10, “Fear No Mort,” gave the show’s two titular heroes an unusually happy ending, one major recurring character was not so lucky in the post-credits scene. Rick and Morty has a large cast of supporting stars, but the show doesn’t treat them all that well. For every character like Space Beth, who became a major presence after her introduction, there is a figure like Slow Möebius, who was introduced in season 2, forgotten about for years, and then brutally killed off midway through season 7. However, even his fate isn’t as bad as the trials that one of Rick’s oldest friends has been put through.

After Rick and Morty season 7’s Rick Prime death, the show could have taken its storyline anywhere. Surprisingly, the subsequent episodes were mostly light-hearted, standalone outings. As such, it was no shock when the season finale made matters a little darker for the eponymous pair. Season 7, episode 10 saw Rick and Morty venture into The Hole, a strange psychic space that simulated a user’s greatest fear and allowed them to overcome it, emerging a changed person. The misadventure allowed Morty to defeat his reliance on Rick when he realized Rick had never followed him down at all. The main characters’ optimistic growth, however, was followed by the reverse for a familiar figure in the post-credits scene.

Rick And Morty Season 7’s Finale Stinger Proves Mr Poopybutthole Learned Nothing

Although Morty learned to rely on himself in the season 7 finale, episode 10’s post-credits sequence proved Mr. Poopybutthole didn’t really want to improve his life. The supporting star promised Rick that he would get over his ex-wife Amy and focus on himself after the season 7 premiere, but he instead ended up using a portal gun to jump dimensions and trade places with a version of himself who hadn’t been left yet. While Rick and Morty season 7, episode 9’s post-credits scene set up a powerful new enemy for Rick, this was still the darkest of the season’s stingers since it came after both Rick and Morty improved their outlooks.

Rick spent the episodes after Rick Prime’s sudden defeat contending with his mortality, traveling to Valhalla and fighting the Pope solely so he could work out his new purpose in life. Morty, meanwhile, went out of his way to face his greatest fear, realized that fear was relying on Rick, and decided to stop seeing himself as an extension of his super-genius grandfather. In stark contrast, Poopybutthole simply dimension-hopped into a universe where he and Amy never broke up instead of changing, improving himself, and moving on. Most of season 7’s stingers were lighter and sillier, but this twist was just sad.

Mr. Poopybutthole’s Failures Highlight Rick’s Character Change

Morty’s decision to jump in The Hole showed that he needed to pursue a life outside of Rick’s adventures. However, Rick deciding not to jump in proved that he finally learned to fear, as well as giving Morty his begrudging respect. Both of these character details proved that Rick had a reason to live outside of his now-completed revenge quest against Rick Prime. Poopybutthole jumped back to a time when he was happy without critically thinking about what went wrong with him and Amy, displaying that he wasn’t willing to make the same changes. As such, the post-credits scene helped highlight the growth of Rick and Morty’s lead character.
